The convergence of a vision

To imagine a unique zellige collection, the Aït Manos House reached out to designer Myriam Mourabit. Aït Manos, a worthy ambassador of artistic trades in Morocco, solicited designer Myriam Mourabit to create a collection of decorative objects and elements made from zellige. Keen on handmade work that she applies in her workshops, Myriam Mourabit delicately sheds light on Moroccan cultural heritage through her creations. Trained at the Ecole Supérieure des Arts Appliqués and the Ecole Nationale des Arts Décoratifs de Paris, Myriam took a liking to materials and colors over the course of her studies. Fascinated by Moroccan heritage, she diffuses it with subtlety and harmony through her creations marked with minimal curves. Conjugating reinvented traditional references and a desire to go straight to the essence, her world is as untypical as it is recognizable.
Founder of the ZECUBE® design office, Myriam Mourabit strives to develop an identifying design marked by a sensitivity and spirit rooted in her cultural heritage. Her concepts revisit Berber iconography and the Arab-Andalusian heritage. 15-years in, Myriam Mourabit managed to make a name for herself in the neo-oriental design world. In 2013, the MYRIAM MOURABIT® brand was awarded the best design trophy at the Morocco Awards. Today, Myriam Mourabit has widened her field of investigation by proposing complete concepts with the desire of exporting a contemporary Moroccan identity.

Renowned for her remarkably refined creations, Myriam Mourabit promotes the alliance of design and arts & crafts. Zellige, the age-old traditional technique and a reflection of Moroccan crafts, is the spearhead of Aït Manos, who strives to magnify it through its creations, developing techniques that are both unique and forward-looking to simplify the laying of the tiles. The symbiosis of both approaches resulted in the PikZel collection, designed by Myriam Mourabit for the Aït Manos house and created by the Aït Manos Workshops. These creations were showcased at the Institut du Monde Arabe in 2016 and the Casablanca Design Week in October 2017.
A symbol of traditional know-how and of Moroccan ornamental sophistication, zellige, the age-old mosaic, is explored through its geometry by designer Myriam Mourabit. Marked with dark and light lines, Myriaam Mourabit’s work reveals the beauty and all the facets of zellige through a display of colorful hues.

logo pikzel

Between the lines

PikZel, in the hands of Myriam Mourabit, reshapes Arab geometric layouts, structured and remarkable with the limitless possibilities that they offer. Revisiting her favorite zellige patterns, using an organized shading effect, through PikZel, Myriam Mourabit shades dark hues, such as black and chocolate into grays, anthracite, taupe, all the way to the more natural hues reminiscent of the Earth. PikZek is composed of identically-sized lozenge-shaped zellige, revealing a unique traditional Moroccan zellige graphic design. Punctuated by a positive / negative treatment of the graphic design, the zellige displays a pixilated pattern. A gradation of hues is added onto that, with darker tones below and lighter ones above to create an “organized” shading effect. PikZel currently comes in 2 shades. The first is a gradation of black that blends into warmer earth tone hues. The second is a gradation of blue hues. As such, for the second color palette, Myriam Mourabit chose a range going from navy to celadon, Carrara, lava, all exclusive enamels of the Aït Manos color range. To enhance the panels, a few golden leaf or chiseled silver lozenges pop out here and there. This unique technique, that is specific to the Aït Manos workshops, creates a contrast of textures and an embossed appearance that embellish the traditional graphic design. The same process is applied to the range of PikZel modular tables, which undergo a positive/negative treatment.

Concept and techniques of the PikZel zellige

The PikZel collection signed by Aït Manos x Myriam Mourabit is composed of handmade baked clay mosaics fired twice at 980 degrees and mounted on an ultralight construction panel, a technology exclusively devised by the Aït Manos Workshops. It is through this meticulously accurate process that the PikZel collections come to life. Suited for all indoor coating, the PikZel collection is an original decorative creation designed just like a masterpiece in its own right.

Zelliqueen: Suddenly, zellige becomes Jewelery.

The story of a collaboration

Zelliqueen is the fruit of an exclusive collaboration between two Moroccan houses, Aït Manos, the specialist of Moroccan zellige, and Noémie Créations, a Moroccan brand of refined jewelry. With a shared vision of promoting age-old Moroccan know-how, the two houses created Zelliqueen, a jewelry collection made of zellige. Zelliqueen is a story of art and technique, of terra cotta and precious materials, of ancestral know-how and innovative designs, of talents and passions. An ancient heritage, zellige is now reinventing itself in the world of goldsmithing, through a jewelry collection designed by the Aït Manos and Noémie Créations workshops. The treasures of a culture are an invitation to an extraordinary inner journey. Zelliqueen imposes itself as a self-evident creation, not only bearing the unique mark of those who have shaped it but also that of a terra cotta chiseled for several centuries, under the sun of the imperial city of Fes. Motivated by the same passion that encourages them to put their heart and soul into their creations, the Aït Manos Workshop and jewelry designer Myriam Chraibi Andaloussi (Noémie Créations) joined forces for an exceptional collaboration. The result? A sleek and pure design that is suitable for all circumstances. Just like a poem, the association of water and fire becomes an ornament, to be worn close to one’s heart, just like an echo of the love for a land, for an immemorial culture and for authentic values.

A collection that sublimates Moroccan artistic trades

The result? A delicate blend of trends. When arts & crafts aim for excellence, when a journey becomes a dream, a new story begins: and each person can tell it with an outsized jewelry piece which has made a prominent appearance in the fine jewelry world. Zellige refers to an age-old Moroccan heritage and know-how that was always designed in keeping with traditions that have influenced different periods. To beautify the zellige 100% made in Morocco, born out of its water, of its baked clay and the hands of its maâlems* (craftsmen), guardians of this naturally precious heritage, the designer Myriam Chraibi Andaloussi chose to bring the heat of the metal and the brilliance of gold to a rough and noble material. The Zelliqueen collection reveals a surprising alchemy of materials. Delicate and refined, the mineral pattern comes in 2 formats and 6 colors, elegantly embellished with a fine gold chain. Ceramic pendants with a studded bezel outline as a tribute to traditions and the surprising modernity.

Aït Manos, masters of Moroccan zellige

A landmark of luxury décor in Morocco, Aït Manos was launched in 1995 by Ghalia Sebti and Tawfik Bennani. Since 1997, the brand has revolutionized the world of zellige by creating the “Aït Manos Thinset Zillij”, a process facilitating tile-laying using pre-assembled and ready to lay tile panels. Today, the brand’s innovation capacity and its wide range of colors allow it to meet demand from all around the world, and to create different environments, from the most traditional to trendier ones so as to promote this ancient crafts heritage whilst adapting the product to current requirements.

Noémie Créations, the fantasy of refined jewelry

Determined to challenge the boundaries of jewelry, Myriam Chraïbi Andaloussi launched the brand Noémie Créations in 2007 before opening her first store in 2014 at the heart of Casablanca’s Golden Triangle. Inspired by Moroccan traditions, moved by the purity of natural stones, interested in their qualities, passionate about fashion and trends, she imagines her jewelry pieces to be a reflection of the world that surrounds her. In her workshop, she manually shapes unique jewelry pieces capturing the latest trends and seasons, adorned with fine gold or silver. She draws her inspiration from the Moroccan and oriental cultures, in a colorful and original spirit to design and shape her tailor-made creations, enhanced with a delicate bohemian touch.

Eric Gizard, audacious talent

Eric Gizard

An eclectic jack of all trades, Eric Gizard draws his inspiration and references from contemporary Decorative Arts. Fascinated by his era, without as much denying the past, Eric Gizard widens his field of investigation to cover a multitude of topics marked by a deeply personal approach that confers an undeniable originality to his work. His signature? An affirmation of contrasts, a collision between materials that collide with colors, an exploration of light and dark, a carefully studied blend of tradition and modernity are defining characteristics of Eric Gizard’s work. After his studies at the Ecole des Arts Appliqués Duperré, he joined Michel Boyer’s architecture firm as an archivist. He then worked as a journalist before developing his first interior architecture projects, namely for the Habitat store chain. In 1999, he created his agency, EGA, where he focused his work on private projects, hotels and public spaces. In 2005, he was dignified at the Now! Exhibition at Maison & Objet where he was awarded the designer of the year award alongside Andrée Putman. Adopting a thoughtful approach, he is keen on well-drawn spaces, with beaming light and sun kissed interiors.

A cosmopolitan loving the World and its variety, he set out on different projects, always driven with the same passion. From boutiques to Japanese apartments, he went on to design tea houses in Korea, establishing offices in Shanghai, designing the environments of luxury Asian cosmetics brands, private hotels and residences in Europe, presidential spaces and Parisian boutiques, the design concept of the Printemps department store in Deauville, not to mention furniture design. And it doesn’t stop there! We also owe to his vivid imagination the harmonious design of the Air France A380 cabins and the development of their VIP lounges throughout the world, the Metropolis collections (crystal glasses and carafe), and Vibration (the table lamp and crystal light fixture) for Saint Louis, a wool and silk carpet collection for Chevalier Edition…

In 2011, he did a collaboration with Steiner and signed the Ypsilon collection (table and buffet), the Omega chair and Nuage sofa, all combinable and adaptable to different styles of interior décor. A complete selection of furniture that oscillates between a Scandinavian inspiration and the fifties, reinterpreted by the designer with ingenuity, audaciousness and contemporaneousness. Rebounding from one project to the next with great versatility, he focused his efforts on design with simplicity as his guiding principle, staying true to contemporary imperatives of lightness, fluidity and readability. Another of his collaborations was the design of a sofa collection for Treca Interiors, before embarking on the decoration of public spaces and the design and development of the Novotel Munich Airport hotel and the Novotel Dinard spa.

In parallel to the creation of furniture lines for different furniture makers, he also worked on creating a tableware line, light fixtures and fine dining objects for leading French luxury brands. As for private residences, he was entrusted with the redesign and sublimation of spaces in Saint Germain en Laye, Avenue Foch and Montparnasse.

Modern Zellige

Design in all its forms? Most certainly so! For Aït Manos, the designer imagined a borderless zellige collection, colored with a ravaging modernity. Named Casablanca, it meets the demand of the Aït Manos house to reveal the original take of Eric Gizard on this age-old Moroccan zellige. The result? A fiercely contemporary collection made of age-old materials.
Keeping an eye on the past and turning to the future? That is the creed of Aït Manos, masters of Moroccan zellige. Since the inception of this Moroccan decorative art in the confines of the Fes medina, zellige by Aït Manos lives by the winds of zeitgeist. Because Aït Manos is on a constant quest of exclusivities to adapt to its customers’ demands, the designer house reached out to Eric Gizard to pursue the ambition of anchoring zellige in a modern dynamic. As a producer, Aït Manos, in synergy with Eric Gizard created Casablanca, a collection of two friezes composed of lozenge-shaped thin-set zellige. Baptized “Mirage” and “Sahara”, they take on the appearance of hypnotic kaleidoscopes of zesty tiles. Showcased at the Dubai stand for Aït Manos in 2014, Casablanca is a reflection of the designer’s inventiveness and the excellence of the know-how and techniques that characterize the Aït Manos Workshops.

Collection Classic

The Classic collection itemizes all of the essential patterns of Moroccan zellige. Deeply rooted in Moroccan architectural heritage, these patterns, such as the iconic “Oulmes” are revisited by Aït Manos to build spaces that hint at Moroccan tradition whilst keeping a contemporary character. As such, as much as they are sometimes commonly used in their original versions, other times they are revisited in monochromatic hues in the heart of the Aït Manos Workshops, resulting in a unique and singular décor.

MAISON AÏT MANOS

For the past twenty years the House of Aït Manos has been combining the traditional Arab-Andalousian heritage with technical innovations in order to create exclusive zellij collections. Mastering an ancient know-how born in Morocco in the 10th century, the House of Aït Manos still perpetrates to this day this ancient technic through it’s interpretation of modern zellij, Aït manos brings back the full scope of decorative possibilities. Surrounded by the greatest team of master craftsmen, the Aït Manos Team, with the collaboration of architects and designers, has made available this beautiful hand cut terracotta mosaic through out the world for their projects.

GHALIA SEBTI & TAWFIK BENNANI

Behind the Aït Manos house is a cosmopolitan couple that is passionate about Moroccan arts and crafts. Ghalia & Tawfik met in 1990 on the shores of the Mediterranean. They share a melting pot of cultures against a Moroccan background. With his Austrian and Moroccan origins, Tawfik was raised for the most part abroadas he was the son of diplomats. Tawfik was deeply attached to Morocco and itsdecorative arts, which his artist spirit combined with a Germanic rigor recognized forits uniqueness. As for Ghalia, she was raised in keeping with the traditions of Fes, thenative city of her father, and with the rigor of her mother from Lyon, who raised fourchildren with a sense of devotion and ongoing perfectionism. Around this passion for Morocco and its light, its traditions, aestheticism and crafts, they founded the AïtManos house in 1995, an allegory of their love for zellige. Since then, they have been manufacturing, sublimating, presenting and modernizing it without ever distortingits age-old manufacturing process.
