Interview Manuel Gomez - Maison Gomez
ManuelGomez is the fourth generation to head the Maison Gomez. Manuel always knew it was his destiny to carry on the family legacy. After 11 years working alongside his father in the company, he took over the reins in 2021 and developed the business with brio.Aït Manos, artisan creator of zelliges, has been building its partnership with Maison Gomez for over 6 years. Aït Manos zelliges are now on sale in showrooms in Toulouse, Labège, Albi and Montpellier. Maison Gomez is also the brand's exclusive distributor in Occitanie and Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Here's a look back at a wonderful story and, above all, a magnificent human adventure.
Maison Gomez has been in business for over 50 years. Can you tell us about this wonderful family adventure?
It all began with my great-grandfather, a granito maker, who set up his workshop in Muret near Toulouse after leaving Spain because of the war. My grandfather continued this adventure by developing a strong local identity, with a constant quest for quality and service. We've always had a regional vision and a passion for natural materials and noble products, and when demand for granito declined around 20 years ago, we slowed down manufacturing to focus on the bathroom and new products such as parquet, paint, wallpaper and waxed concrete. Today, our company continues to thrive and grow, remaining true to our values and heritage.
How are architects' demands changing? Are you seeing a return to materials and handmade products?
Architects play a crucial role in our business. Over the years, we have built up special relationships with them. They help their customers choose the right materials. We always try to offer innovative, authentic products. There's a real desire to return to handmade, sustainable products, even if cost remains an issue. Architects appreciate the nobility and authenticity of handmade products, which often become signature elements in their projects. We are also seeing a growing interest in materials that blend in with nature and respect the environment.
How do you explain the worldwide craze for zellige among decorators?
There's no denying that over the past 7 or 8 years, there's been a real craze for Moroccan zellige. Decorators and customers alike marvel at the vibrant colors and unique patterns of zellige. This traditional mosaic brings a touch of authenticity and elegance to any space, and its thousand-year-old history resonates with those seeking materials rich in culture and craftsmanship.
Could you tell us about your relationship with Aït Manos and his teams?
Our relationship with Aït Manos is based on shared values and approaches to quality, family and the notion of a job well done. Over the past six years, we have forged strong ties with Aït Manos, sharing a genuine emotion and attachment to their history and products. We try to convey this story to our teams and our customers, in order to maintain this unique connection. We also share an entrepreneurial spirit and a taste for well-made products, always trying to be one step ahead. We have several exciting projects in the pipeline with Ghalia and her team, and can't wait to see what the future holds.
